The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy

"The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy" is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1996 with the goal of decreasing teenage pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy among single, young adults. Its Board of Directors is led by Chairman Tom Kean, former Governor of New Jersey and Chairman of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; and President Isabel Sawhill, a Senior Fellow of Economic Studies at The Brookings Institution.

The organization also includes a vast stable of advisory groups, each with various backgrounds and expertise. These groups include: The Bipartisan Congressional Advisory Panels in the House and Senate; Latino Initiative Advisory Group; Media Advisory Group; Personal Responsibility, Religion, and Values Advisory Group; Public Policy Advisory Group; Research Advisory Panel; and State and Local Action Advisory Group.

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy is mainly funded by private donations and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Activities

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy states that its goal is “to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families and, in particular, to help ensure that children are born into stable, two-parent families who are committed to and ready for the demanding task of raising the next generation.”[1]

National Day To Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Since 2001, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy has designated one specific day in May as the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy The day was created to bring awareness to teen pregnancy and help teens come up with their own plans for avoiding pregnancy. Between 2002 and 2008, almost 3.5 million teens have participated in the day’s activities;[2] meanwhile, an estimated 600,000 participated in 2011. One activity involved taking a quiz on The National Campaign’s teen site, StayTeen.org.[3]

Bedsider.org

On November 10, 2011, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy joined the Ad Council to unveil its first-ever advertising campaign to address unplanned pregnancies among young women in the U.S. The three year campaign directed sexually active women ages 18–24 to Bedsider.org, an online to resource devoted to birth control methods and their proper implementation. The site “aims to help young women (ages 18-29) find a method of birth control that’s right for them and stick with it through a series of online, video and mobile components.”[4] Bedsider has earned a glowing endorsement from Dr. Drew Pinsky, and also included a variety of humorous PSAs created by Euro RSCG.[5]
